Sue Kennington was born in London and attended Goldsmiths College (MFA) and Chelsea (BA Painting). She moved her practice to central Italy in 2002 after completing her MFA, and now works between there and a studio in San Lorenzo, Rome. In 1996 her work featured in New Contemporaries at the Tate Liverpool and the Camden Arts Centre, London. Since then she has gone on to exhibit regularly in both Italy, France and the UK. Recent exhibitions include Sue Kennington & Fleur Simon | New Work at Sid Motion Gallery, London, 2019; Third Hand solo exhibition at C2 Contemporanea in Florence, Italy, 2018; Glimpse at Golborne Gallery, London 2017; Imperfect Reverse at Camberwell Arts Space, London, 2017 and Colour, Order, System at Sid Motion Gallery, London, 2017. In 2018 she was selected as a finalist for the Premio Lissone prize at MAC Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Lissone, Italy.
Kennington’s work explores the limits of how colour alone can be used as an emotive visual language, embedding the material into esoteric systems, repetitions and asymmetries, with particular emphasis on using colour juxtaposition as an agent of light.
