Sue Kennington was born in London and attended Goldsmiths College (MFA) and Chelsea (BA). She moved her practice to central Italy in 2002 after completing her MFA, and now works between there and a studio in San Lorenzo, Rome. In 1996 her work featured in NewContemporaries at the Tate Liverpool and the Camden Arts Centre, London. Since then she has gone on to exhibit regularly in both Italy and the UK. Exhibitions in 2017 include ‘Colour, Order, System’ at Sid Motion Gallery, London, ‘Glimpse’ at Golborne Gallery, London and ‘Imperfect Reverse’ at Camberwell Arts Space, London. She recently completed a Visiting Artist Residency at the American Academy in Rome.
Kennington’s work explores the limits of how colour alone can be used as an emotive visual language, embedding the material into esoteric systems, repetitions and asymmetries, with particular emphasis on using colour juxtaposition as an agent of light.
